In this video I discuss setting up a simple day trading station. I’ll be the first to admit that the trading station you see in the background of my video is not “simple”. That’s my day trading station, it includes 3 laptops, 6 external monitors, and a mixing board for my audio stream. This is the equipment I use everyday as a day trader, but also as an educator. For the average trader, you’ll be able to get by with much less.

I always recommend starting with a great computer. I’ve always bought good computers, and in fact the computer I’m typing on right now is 5 years old, but still runs great because it was a top of the line computer 5 years ago. I prefer computers branded as Gaming computers, because they’ll naturally have better specs. A solid state drive, 16-32GB of RAM, and a strong graphics card are all part of a good gaming machine.

Using laptops or desktops is totally personal preference. I like using laptops because they are portable, and I travel a fair amount. Once you’ve chosen your computer, it’s time to get your monitors! When I’m traveling, I use my portable ASUS monitors. They’re a bit pricey at $179 each. The 24″ monitors in my office are about $125 each, however, they do require a USB to HDMI graphics card adapter. If you do happen to get a great spec gaming machine, it’s possible you won’t need to utilize USB to HDMI external graphics cards.

When you’re running a lot of equipment off the USB drive, you’ll want to get a USB hub. These are cheap at less than $15 each.

Lastly, make sure you have an Ethernet cable so you can be hardwired while you’re trading. I do trade on wifi about 20% of the time (these are the days when I’m traveling), but I prefer to be on an Ethernet cable whenever possible.
